The brand new Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine (KIAM) houses our state-of-the-art 3 Tesla IMRIS/Siemens MRI scanner.
Unlike traditional MRI systems, this is an Intraoperative MRI scanner. That means that it is located between two operating theaters and is mounted on the ceiling – no small feat, considering that the magnet weighs approximately 8.2 tons – allowing it to travel into either operating room on demand. This creates a seamlessly integrated environment that quickly provides surgeons with imaging data at any time (i.e., before, during and/or after a procedure) without moving the patient.
However, in addition to performing its clinical intraoperative duties, we are also conducting a number of functional MRI (fMRI) and white matter imaging studies on this system to assess brain structure and function in healthy volunteers and patients with various neurological disorders.
The magnet itself is a 3 Tesla Siemens Magnetom Verio with a wide 70 cm bore, 18 receiver channels, and a high-power VQ-Engine gradient set (45 mT/m @ 200 T/m/s). Peripheral equipment is available for fMRI experiments, including a NordicNeuroLab LCD monitor and audio system for audio-visual presentation and two ResponseGrips button boxes for recording subject responses.

Moreover, if you don't want to brave the elements (for example, during the cold Winnipeg winter), it is connected to the HSC by a tunnel and the William Avenue Skywalk (pedestrian overpass).
